Shortboards, Mid lengths & Hybrids
Corky and Mike began competing against each other over 6 decades ago. Today, both are in their 70's, and still rip. Corky's models are sold under Blue Mango Surfboards. Corky convinced Mike to jump in and bring back his iconic Hot Lips Designs by Mike Purpus brand. Together, they have also co-designed several Legends of Surfing models. Each is autographed by the both of them. We're also pleased to announce that Robert Highsmith, owner of the legendary 60's brand, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards, recently licensed team Barahona to build his PF boards for him in the South Bay.
So it's only natural that their 100% handcrafted boards would be shaped in what's likely the oldest, continuous running surfboard factory in the world. Back in 1961, it was called the Rick Factory (Rick Stoner), then the Becker Factory in the late 70's (Phil Becker RIP), then the Mangiagli Cypress Glassing Factory. Today, it's known as the factory, much like the University of Miami is known as the "U". Oscar and Jose Barahona have both worked under that same roof for over 4 decades. These guys have also ghost shaped for some of the biggest labels in the business. It is no wonder Phil Becker trusted his Becker brand to Jose nearly two decades ago. Hap Jacobs (RIP) upon retiring, also tapped Jose to continue his iconic Jacobs brand.
If you are in the Hermosa Beach area, checking out this historical building should be on your agenda. Better yet, make an appointment to have a board personally built right before your very eyes by the best in the business. If you can't wait for a custom, head over to the legendary DiveNsurf shop in Redondo beach and you may find what you want in their board racks today.
So let's review... We have two living legend surfers from the 1960's and 1970's who both still surf to this day at a very high level. They are both sharing their magic shapes under each's brand.. Team Barahona is shaping and glassing them in the same legendary factory that Rick Surfboards, Becker Surfboards, DANC Surfboards, Calvani Surfboards (Bing), Barahona Surfboards, along with dozens of others that were ghost shaped that I cannot name here. With this kind of provenance, it's only natural that the iconic Dive'N'Surf Body Glove Surf Shop in Redondo Beach would become our first Los Angeles area authorized dealer. Don't get suckered into buying a Chinese made machine pop-out. Our boards may cost a little more but they are built better, last longer, ride better, and offer an amazing resale value. On top of that, your purchase supports over a dozen local employees, not to mention Corky Carroll and Mike Purpus themselves!
