Golf
Ixtapa’s two world-class, 18-hole courses make this tropical destination a haven for golf enthusiasts. The courses are located at opposite ends of Ixtapa’s main hotel strip, just five minutes apart by taxi. Zihuatanejo is just 10 minutes away.
Palma Real Golf Course (Campo de Golf Palma Real) was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1977 as a key element in the Master Plan of FONATUR (National Fund for Tourism Development) which conceived and developed Ixtapa as a modern resort destination, and created this golf course from a coconut plantation.
Marina Ixtapa Golf Club (Club de Golf Marina Ixtapa), designed by Robert von Hagge, opened in January 1994 as part of the multi-million-dollar Marina Ixtapa project. The two courses are located at opposite ends of Ixtapa’s main hotel strip, just five minutes apart by taxi (Zihuatanejo is just 15 minutes away). Both are both known for their expert and personalized caddy service which is also traditional throughout Mexico.

Palma Real Golf Course
A superb example of original Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, this par 72, 6,898-yard Palma Real Golf Course harmonizes with its environment which, in fact, is a former coconut plantation that retains its natural lakes, lagoons, and lush tropical vegetation alongside the scenic Pacific coastline. The Sierra Madre Sur provides a panoramic mountainous backdrop.
Players enjoy not only some of the world's best golfing, but also a feeling of closeness to Nature. Surrounding the course are coconut and other species of palms, and trees abundant with mangoes, guavas, limes, oranges and almonds. Brilliantly-colored flowers accent the verdant vegetation.
Mexican and international ecologists consider these grounds a wildlife preserve. Golfers see and hear a variety of exotic birds such as parrots, macaws, cardinals, and a rare and peculiar species of eagle called pescador (“fisherman”) because it feeds exclusively on fish from the lakes. Seen but not heard are rabbits and “giant" iguanas.
Do not attempt to retrieve balls from the water hazards because crocodiles live in some of them! They usually repose submerged and out of sight, however they do stroll around at dawn. According to our expert golf colleagues, the Campo de Golf Palma Real is a serious world class golf course and well maintained. The word is the Marina Ixtapa Golf Club apparently has apparently not been as well maintained as of late, For those who want to play leisurely without being rushed, this may be the place as it's nowhere near as busy as the Palma Real course. In both cases`, there are alligators, crocodiles and other interesting "hazards" not usually found at most courses in the states.
Here's a recent (March 2019) Trip Advisor users opinion... Pretty much every hole is a challenge . Want sand, it's here , want water, it's here , want scenery, it's here, want gators, birds, turtles, iguanas, They got 'em. Current prices are 1000 pesos for seniors ( over 60) about $52 US. ,for 18 holes, One must bring photo copies of your drivers lic each time you play to get that rate. Otherwise its 1500 pesos. Current rate is 18 pesos for 1 US dollar. They have a caddy shack to store your clubs . They have a drink truck that makes frequent rounds. Zero rain here for 100 days so its hot, mid 80s every day. They do water the course tho at nite. Most of the greens roll well. about 77 sand traps . Most are good. They give you a rake to use. They have a little shack at the turn. Drinks, beer, burgers, The main bar and main club house is shut down. Sad, as they used to have good food and drinks there and AC. No Mas. We always stay in centro Zihau, rooms and food cheap. Many awesome restaurants. Cab to Ixtapa is 90 pesos, a bus 14. The course is gov't run and they are trying to keep it going. For value, I say its fair for what you get. Could the course be better maintained? Well, sure, but for the amount of heat they get year around, it's in pretty good shape. We usually teed off by 9 and had a few waits but not a issue. The staff, all friendly and helpful. Caddies are available. Carts are old but still ok. Only had one zonk out all week. Hope this helps. Fore!
Marina Ixtapa Golf Club
Marina Ixtapa Golf Club (Club de Golf Marina Ixtapa) Robert von Hagge, famed for creating some of the world's most outstanding courses, designed this par 72, 6793-yard course with meandering canals, 12 bridges, and a dunes-style topography.
Rolling terrain covers 136 acres, with expansive sand traps and water hazards guarding 14 of the 18 holes. No wonder Golf Digest Magazine ranked it as one of Mexico’s best.
The Clubhouse, in Spanish-Mediterranean architecture, features and airy restaurant and lounge areas with picture windows and balconies overlooking the yacht marina and golf course. Facilities include a full-service pro-shop, men's and women's locker rooms, tennis courts, swimming pool and, of course, the "19th hole for that extra round".
Word is, unlike the Palma, this course has not been as well maintained and the rickety bridges with lots of crocodiles below and carts with little or no breaks may not be for the faint hearted. Normally golf is not considered a sport with consequences. This place is as close to it gets to playing Jurassic Park and it most surely will be a memorable experience.

Fishing and Boating
Aside from the world class surfing, the fishing in this region is also noteworthy. Go for Sailfish, Marlin, YellowFin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo and more on the all day Zihuatanejo Harbor Charters. Choose a local half Day Panga from Mahajua or Playa La Saladita for as low as $150 for all five people. Near shore fish species include mahi mahi, bonito, sierra, jack, and roosterfish.
Take one of Benitos Water Taxis and get the best of both worlds. Surf some amazing spots that require boating in access then fish on the way home to catch your lunch. If you catch anything tasty, Benito will even prepare ceviche or cook it when you return in his restaurant. These Pangas are nothing fancy but they are efficient and these Captains know these waters and are the best. Ixtapa Villa guests will need to taxi over or try to talk Corky into an early pickup. Guests of his Playa La Saladita Surf Adventure can simply walk 500 yards on the beach to get to the boats. The rivers are also full of snook (robalo) so that's another great option.
